Discovery vs. Genesis GV80 Comparison with Price, Specs, & Photos

The Discovery has been around for several decades, providing a restrained and refined English sense of luxury to go with its generous helpings of functionality and even off-road prowess. But in the time since the Discovery’s debut, SUVs have become quite a popular vehicle type, and competitors have emerged from everywhere. One of the newest of these is the GV80, the flagship SUV model from Genesis. How does this relative newcomer compare to the tried-and-true Discovery? Let’s have a look.

To start with, the GV80 doesn’t come with standard all-wheel drive, which the Discovery does. But as you can see, adding the option to the GV80 makes it almost exactly the same price as the Discovery. Power output, fuel economy, and towing capacity are also all essentially the same, so what we’re going to be focusing on here is what that nearly identical money actually gets you from each manufacturer. Right from the start, there is a pretty big difference: the Discovery comes with a third row of seats. This is possible because the Discovery is slightly bigger, as further evidenced by the larger cargo capacity.

The Discovery comes with bigger wheels, and if you’re looking for 21- or 22-inch wheels on the Discovery S, you can just select them the same way you would a different paint color. But that’s not the case with the GV80. The wheels are smaller, and upgrading to 20-inch wheels requires you to change trim levels, adding a minimum of $4,000 to the price. Want 22-inch wheels? That trim costs $14,000 more. So when the chart says that features like adaptive suspension, leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel, or a surround-view parking camera are optional, it’s important to remember that none of those are à la carte optional, and all of them require trim upgrades. But that isn’t a problem for fog lights, since the GV80 doesn’t offer them on any trim. There is a premium stereo available for the GV80, one that’s more similar to the Meridian system in the Discovery, but in this price range, the Discovery has a clear advantage in stereo systems.

Winner – Discovery

When all is said and done, it’s hard to figure out exactly why Genesis is charging what it does for the GV80, given the fact that it comes with so little equipment. But perhaps more egregious is just how difficult and expensive it is to get those features you’re missing out on. Fortunately, there is a solution: the Discovery. And Land Rover North Hills is here to help you find the one that’s just right for you.
