Both the Defender 130 and the Discovery give you a ton of capability, luxury, and three rows of seats. But that’s not to say these two vehicles are the same; far from it, in fact. The two take a very different approach, leading to each one having a distinct set of advantages. This does mean that there is a lot to consider when choosing which one is right for you, so we put together this guide to help.

To start off with, the Defender 130 is priced a bit higher than the Discovery. It is also a bit bigger, though – taller and longer, with a longer wheelbase, although the Discovery is a bit wider. That being said, the size difference isn’t something that you’ll feel sitting in either vehicle, as all three rows of seats offer very similar space, and the difference mostly comes down to cargo space. But there is one other significant difference, the Defender 130 is available with 8 seats, while the Discovery maxes out at 7. Both vehicles come with a 3.0-liter inline-six engine, but in different states of tune. The Discovery comes with more standard power, but the base S trim of the Defender 130 is the only one to offer the 296-horsepower tune, with all the rest coming with 395 horsepower. Both vehicles, however, have an excellent towing capacity of 8,200 pounds. Ground clearance and wading depth are both a bit higher for the Defender 130, which is because the whole Defender line is made for off-roading first and everything else second, while the Discovery is intended to be a bit more balanced, which brings us to our next section.

Defender 130 VS Discovery – Equipment

Just like we’ve seen with the engines, some of the equipment differences come down to setup more than the actual equipment. For example, both vehicles come with air suspension, but the suspension on the Defender is tuned for off-road use, while the Discovery is tuned for comfort. The cabins are outfitted differently, with the Discovery offering a range of leather upholstery options and the option to choose different trim materials, while the Defender emphasizes durability and materials that are easy to wash. But overall, Land Rover has always emphasized customization and off-road capability as defining characteristics of its vehicles, so the Discovery is highly capable, and the Defender can be customized to a high level of luxury. Both vehicles are well suited to both tasks, but the Defender is still more aimed at off-roading, while the Discovery is more aimed at luxury.
