2026 Range Rover vs Lexus LX: Full-Size Luxury SUV Comparison
The Range Rover might have been the first real luxury off-road SUV, but when competitors saw it, quite a few recognized the potential in this new market segment. When Lexus introduced its first SUV, it was a Range Rover competitor, the LX. Lexus borrowed heavily from its parent company, Toyota, and its extensive truck-building experience, giving the LX the genuine off-road ability that makes it one of the few serious competitors to the Range Rover. But how do the modern versions of each of these vehicles compare? Let’s take a look.
Range Rover VS Lexus LX
The first thing you’ll notice when you start shopping for one of these vehicles is the lack of choices available for the LX when compared to the Range Rover. The Range Rover has two different wheelbase lengths, a choice of three rows of seats, or a deleted third row and reclining third-row seats. The Range Rover has four different drivetrains, including two V8s and a plug-in hybrid, while the LX has two: a V6 and the same V6 mated to a conventional hybrid system. The LX is available in just five paint colors, while just the standard SE trim of the Range Rover has 30 to choose from. Lexus is also notorious for a lack of options when it comes to wheel design, requiring you to buy a different trim if you want a different wheel design, even on a flagship model like the LX.
The LX comes with 409 horsepower, going up to 457 horsepower if you opt for the hybrid model. The standard engine in the Range Rover comes with 395 horsepower, very similar to the standard LX engine, but much bigger differences emerge when looking at the optional drivetrains. The PHEV drivetrain produces 543 horsepower, the 4.4-liter V8 produces 523 horsepower, and the V8 in the Range Rover SV produces a whopping 607 horsepower. For smooth application of power, the Range Rover comes with adaptive air suspension. While the LX does come wth adaptive suspension, it doesn’t give you the smooth ride of air suspension. This is ultimately the biggest difference between the two vehicles. The LX might take off-roading as seriously as the Range Rover, but it doesn’t really measure up in the luxury department. This is especially evident when you look at the SV Bespoke program offered for the Land Rover, which unlocks a giant swath of customization options, including custom paint colors, exotic materials, and unique finishes like mosaic marquetry. No such program exists for the LX or any Lexus product.
Winner – Range Rover
The Lexus LX is certainly a luxury off-roader, but it’s a long way off from the reigning champion, the Range Rover. More available power, more comfort, and exponentially more customization options, the Range Rover is what flagship luxury is supposed to look and feel like.
