As we mentioned, the Range Rover has been around a lot longer than the X7, but there’s more to it than that. It isn’t just the X7; BMW didn’t build its first SUV until 1999. Land Rover has been building SUVs, and only SUVs, since 1948. Land Rover SUVs have been used as adventure vehicles all over the world since the early days of the company. The Range Rover also has some serious history on the luxury end of things. Queen Elizabeth II had a particular fondness for Range Rovers, to the point where she would opt to drive herself when in her Range Rover, a rarity when it comes to European royalty. BMW has supplied vehicles for state use in Germany, but no SUVs.
Range Rover VS BMW X7 – Off-Road Ability
Both of these SUVs are large and come with standard all-wheel drive, and you might be tempted to think that they’ll handle rough conditions in roughly the same way. But the truth is that the Range Rover has a massive advantage in this department. Since off-road ability is so integral to the brand, the Range Rover is built using tough body-on-frame construction. Because even the most advanced AWD system in the world isn’t going to change the fact that off-roading requires a vehicle that’s built to handle it from the ground up. The X7, on the other hand, is essentially a taller version of the 7-Series sedan, with both being built on the same platform. That means the X7 has unibody construction, which makes manufacturing cheaper, but presents a real disadvantage in terms of off-road ability.

Looks are a subjective thing, but BMW itself has stated that they want their styling to be controversial, something that’s not for everyone. It makes for a pretty stark contrast against the heritage-inspired clean lines of the Range Rover. You’ll find even more glaring differences inside these vehicles, where things like leather upholstery and ventilated front seats aren’t even standard on the X7. Moving up to the special edition Alpina XB7 gets you a bit more style and a bit more luxury, but Range Rover options like ceramic controls, wood trim with metal inlays, or marquetry don’t have anything approaching an equivalent from BMW. The Range Rover is also available with a long wheelbase and only two rows of seats, making room for reclining and ultra-comfortable back seats. The X7, though, is only available in one wheelbase and one seating configuration.

With its superior off-road ability and multiple wheelbase/seating options, the superior versatility of the Range Rover is pretty obvious, but there are actually even more aspects that we haven’t gotten into yet. Chief among these are the drivetrain options. The X7 is offered with a choice of three engines, provided you’re counting the Alpina version of the vehicle. The Range Rover is offered with a choice of four drivetrains, but the real difference is that one of those is a plug-in hybrid. There is no PHEV version of the X7, not even a conventional hybrid. Just one more way that you can do more with a Range Rover.
