The full-size Range Rover has always been a luxury icon, essentially inventing the concept of a luxury SUV. But in the years since the Range Rover created a new vehicle segment, a lot of other manufacturers have jumped on the bandwagon, including another storied British automaker, Bentley. The Bentley Bentayga is one of the closest competitors to the Range Rover, offering impressive performance, a long list of customization options, and even an extended wheelbase, an exceptionally rare option. Range Rover VS Bentley Bentayga

For this comparison, we’re looking specifically at the Range Rover SV and Range Rover SV Ultra. These are the variants that offer the highest levels of performance, luxury, and bespoke customization. Both the Range Rover and the Bentayga come with a potent V8 under the hood. The Range Rover does offer a bit more power than most Bentayga variants: 607 horsepower versus 542 horsepower. The Bentayga Speed is more powerful still, but you have to be really into things like carbon fiber trim and loud contrasting interior colors to enjoy the Speed. But the really important difference is that the Range Rover is offered with a fully electric drivetrain. Selecting it changes nothing else about the Range Rover; it just plugs in instead of stopping at a gas station. If you want an electric Bentley SUV, that’s an entirely different model.

Both the Range Rover and the Bentayga are offered in both a short and long wheelbase. The purpose of a long wheelbase is generally to provide more rear legroom, and the long-wheelbase Range Rover does indeed offer reclining back seats with 48 inches of legroom. This is in rather stark contrast to the long-wheelbase Bentayga, which offers 40.9 inches of rear legroom and seats that don’t recline. The Range Rover also has bigger rear entertainment screens, 13.1 inches versus 10.1 inches, so you can better see what you’re watching when the seat is reclined. But the real advantage of the Range Rover in the entertainment area is the stereo. Bentley offers a choice of systems from either Bang & Olufsen or Naim, and these are certainly high-end systems, but they’re hardly revolutionary. What is revolutionary is the SV Electrostatic Sound system available for the Range Rover. This system uses thin membranes that are electrostatically controlled, making them 1,000 times more responsive than traditional cone speakers, for unparalleled sound clarity. These panels are also thinner, making them easier to mount in seats or other areas where cone speakers won’t fit, so surround sound immersion is better. For the true audiophile, there is no better automotive stereo in the world.

There was a time when the level of customization available to Bentley owners led the industry. But today, programs like SV Bespoke for the Range Rover make the question of customization largely irrelevant. For both vehicles, the limits of customization are determined only by budget and what is physically possible. But there is still one important thing to note: the Bentayga itself is not bespoke. It shares a platform and even an engine with several other Volkswagen Group products, from the recently discontinued VW Touareg to the new Audi Q9. The Range Rover was built to be a Range Rover, which not only makes it feel a bit more special, but also gives it a serious advantage when it comes to things like off-road ability. And while you can outfit a Range Rover to be flashy if you want, the actual sheet metal is a more restrained design than you get with the Bentley, for which subtlety isn’t quite as much of an option.
